Preventative Dentistry

Preventing dental disease is an important part of your dental health and a significant part of our practice. A program of regular professional cleanings will help to prevent both major dental diseases - tooth decay and gum disease - as well as several systemic diseases. This is because both these diseases are caused by bacteria which adhere to the teeth in the form of what is called dental plaque.

In recent years, many studies have confirmed that these bacteria also contribute to a variety of systemic diseases as well such as heart disease, macular degeneration of the eye, pregnancy specific diseases, and several cancers. Regular dental visits are also essential for the early detection and early treatment of cancers that occur in and around the mouth.

We also spend a great deal of time teaching and advocating proper dental home care as an essential part of the preventative program.

Prevention of dental disease will:

  • Save you time and money both for you and your children. Starting a preventative dentistry schedule early in your child's life will save you many hours of time in the dental office and thousands of dollars in the future.
  • Stronger teeth enable better chewing and digestion of your food resulting in better nutrition – Tooth decay makes it difficult for you to eat properly, thereby robbing your body of enough nutrients to keep you healthy.
  • Proper oral health directly affects your physical health- it also puts you at a much lower risk for developing diabetes and heart disease. A bright, healthy smile will help you develop better self-confidence and self-esteem.

Preventative dentistry should begin at birth with proper nutrition, fluoride ingestion, and cleaning of the teeth. Avoid putting any child to sleep with a bottle in his mouth! By the time your child is 2 years old, they should be coming to the dentist regularly. Preventative dentistry is essential for people of all ages: whether it involves keeping your teeth and gums healthy, examining for oral cancers, or making sure that pcrowns and prosthetic replacements still fit properly.
