Definitions (A-R)
Bonding
Procedures which attach tooth colored materials to the teeth
for cosmetic purposes or fillings.
Children’s Dentistry
children should be seen as early as 2 1/2 to 3 years
of age. We can make this first appointment “fun” for the child. Baby
teeth are important because they help the child eat and speak properly as well as
maintain space for the adult teeth.
Cosmetic Dentistry
We use various procedures such as bonding, veneers,
crowns, and tooth whitening to improve the smile by changing the size, shape, and
color of teeth.
Crowns
Often referred to as
Caps.
A crown covers a tooth completely to restore form and function. We can make these
from porcelain for superior esthetics.
Endodontics
See Root Canal Therapy
Fixed Bridges
These are usually made by placing crowns on the adjacent
teeth and the bridge is cemented in place.
Fluoride
Solutions to make the teeth stronger and more resistant to
decay. The fluoride also acts to kill bacteria which cause decay.
Gingivities
See Gum Diseases
Gum Diseases
Also called gingivitis and periodontitis, these are
diseases of the tooth supporting structures. Frequent cleanings can prevent
or control gum disease. Common symptoms of gum disease are swelling or bleeding
gums and bad breath.
Implants
A treatment in which missing teeth can be replaced by
inserting a prosthesis directly into the jaw bone. This can be used to replace
a single tooth or multiple teeth.
Periodontics
See Gum Diseases
Restorative Dentistry
or Restorations
This refers to a procedure to
restore form, function, and esthetics to the teeth that have been damaged by decay
or fracture.
Removable Bridges
These are prosthetic devices which are supported by
the mouth and teeth. They can be
removed
for easy cleaning.
Root Canal Therapy
Also referred
to as Endodontics.
This procedure is a way to
save a diseased or infected tooth rather than extracting it. The
infection is cleaned from inside the tooth and roots using local anesthesia to eliminate discomfort.
